I would say I didn't have a big discovery on just one thing -- I hadn't used a lot of these sites and it was a great learning experience for me. I hadn't realized how much there was to learn about each site - I use World Cat all the time here at work and didn't know you could look for more things on the site and how to look up different items different ways.
At our library we already have patrons that use the Ancestry site and some others to look up family things. Also when do school tours we show the kids the different Sirs and World Book sites. I would recommend the different sites to our patrons if they need to know about history or do some research.
Again this challenge was a challenge for me...I am grateful I have great co-workers that can help me with different things I didn't understand and they did. I do enjoy these challenges - it is a great thing to learn what is out there for us to use and for our patrons to use that I didn't know existed.

Sanborn Maps
Since I am originally not from SD I don't know many of the towns or what used to be here, so I did end up picking Big Stone City - I lived there for a couple of months and started school there. The date of the map is March 1904 - I know today there isn't as many business open as what is on the map. The only I could recognize was the school. Kind of hard to tell if the school is in the same place now as where it was then. I did also check the February 1927 map and the school is still in the same place and so is the Methodist Church -- I believe I know where that is located...hard for me to tell by the streets. This would be something I see people using if they are looking for an old business or church from a specific time and place. Kind of interesting to know there is something like this available to look at.
Heritage Quest
I looked at all the different things you can go into and what I found was you need to make sure you know names, places and spellings of everything. I did try a search for a MN county for history and got some stuff had no clue what it was. Plus did a search to check an obituary and couldn't find the person I was looking for. I find this site kind of confusing and a little challenging but maybe if worked with it more or had help from someone who has used to show me the way through it I might enjoy it. It has a lot of different search ways - I like the Revolutionary War search - that would be interesting to know if had family that fought in it.

AncestryLibrary
I am kind of excited for this one since I haven't done much family history and haven't used these sites. When searching myself I found my name, date of birth, parents names and also showed when I lived in Browns Valley, MN. I thought that was pretty cool!!
When searching for the grandparent I thought I might have a hard time since couldn't remember when my grandpa was born and forgot he had a middle name since had 2 first names lol. But it came up with information which surprised me. It showed his death information, my mom's birth information and her 2 youngest brothers birth information. I was surprised it didn't show her older sister or her other brother. I think I might use this to do further checking on my ancestors...wonder if can find my grandfather's birth parents..who knows.
Wow when you put in South Dakota you get all kind of different things, famous baseball players, Library of Congress photos which are of different town in SD and WWI solider photos. When you hover your cursor over the information it provides a more detailed information tab. That is kinda cool. This is an interesting site!

The items shown made by Paul Revere were some paintings, a teaspoon, a spoon, a sugar bowl with a cover and some other personal items. I hadn't realized he made those items. I like how it tells you the date of about when the items were around and where they are located.
For the search of Sioux you were also shown paintings, artifacts, dolls and pipes. There were lots of really interesting items that are shared. I like how it tells what the item is, who the creator was, the date and again where the item can be located.
I did my search on Georgia O'Keeffe--some of the workers have been talking about her lately and I wanted to see what kind of work she did. The search brought up some of her paintings...I loved looking at them and found a couple that I liked. Again shows the dates, where they are located - most I could tell would be found in New York, Cleveland and Philadelphia. I found when you click on the picture it makes the picture bigger and gives you more information about the painting. The one I clicked on was the White Flower, price is $8000, dated 1929, tells the size of it and it is oil on canvas. That is all great information for art dealers and collectors. I thought that was kind of interesting to know.
I am not sure how the community would use this.....unless used during an art show display or something like that. Possibly if a student - college or high school had to do research on a particular artist and see some of their work - this would be good for that.
I played with a couple different pictures of Georgia O'Keeffe's and moved them around, did the slide show and the comparing of the images was cool. That would come in handy to check replicas of pictures or if you were painting something that an artist did and want to see how close you got yours...that would be kind of cool. This was an interesting site, glad I got to try it out.

Upon during the search of Sitting Bull I found out he had 3 different AKAs - different names that he went by, I didn't know that. He was a Shawman for the tribe and didn't like the white man. There was a battle of Little Bighorn between the tribe and the white man. Something else I didn't know was that later on he was killed while resisting arrest...I thought he was killed in a battle.
I did my next search on Helen Keller - I love her information, her and her life! She was an amazing woman! The results that came up for me were a lot of different letters you could read and different photos you could look at. Most of the information is coming from different Universities in the US and also the New York State Archives. I can see people using this site to get their information if they need something quick and something with just a little information. It was an interesting site.

WorldCat
I used to be scared to use worldcat thought it was difficult but now that is the only one I use to look up items for patrons to see if can borrow it from another library if we don't have it. I like using it -- it is SO easy to use!!
I looked up the book What Alice Forgot by Liane Moriarty --- very good book!! One that I recommend to patrons to read. When did the search it pulled up 22 results, 976 libraries worldwide and top library was ours AML. The call # is Fiction Moriarty
I didn't know she had other books to read -- now that I know can check authors by clicking on their name I can see what else is available. I will have to order some of her other ones and see if I like them just as much as this one!
When looking at the subject you can click on Australia - that is where the book takes place. Also, memory disorders, amnesiacs and life change events. This site is very useful, helpful and resourceful in so many different ways. You can search so many ways for an item and get what you want.
When did the South Dakota search what comes up is a basic over view of what I clicked on. I clicked on Dreams and Dust in the Black Hills - Shows who the author is, the committee, subject information and department - the history department at the University of New Mexico. It is kind of interesting to use...personally not sure if will use it myself - but good to have to help patrons look up subject information.

EBSCOhost
When I first did a topic search of my choice there were no records found...I like to scrapbook. Tried scrapbook and scrap booking...nothing available. I then went to crafts to see what was available. It comes up with books for craft ideas and any other items that have the word craft in it. I looked at the book Crafts to Make in the Summer - thought maybe would find something to use for summer reading. I did find one really cute project called Flashing Fireflies - easy to follow directions and pictures. That is what I like - can see what you are making...not having to guess.
For the Constitution search -- you gets lots of choices in the drop down to choose from. I found a couple of books I might have used when was a student to look up information. I would have used Speeches of the American Presidents By. Janet Podell and another one would be Dictionary of American History By. Thomas L. Purvis.
For the advance search I put in Nebraska and the items that came up showed they were - University of Nebraska Press. Not sure if that is what I was supposed to find or not....but that is what my search result was.

Gale Virtual Reference Library
The title I picked was Endangered Animals....I like animals. It gives you a choice from Mammals, Birds, Insects, Reptiles, Plants and others to choose from. This site would be good for doing research papers or other researching...gives you lots of detailed information and so much to choose from. I don't think it is a hard site to follow so pretty much anyone would be able to use it.
To search I picked Huckleberry Finn and found an article on Book Banning. I had forgoten this book was on the list. It also gives you articles about rafts and rafting - I thought that was kind of funny, but the boys did use a raft in the book. Also has articles on the Mississippi River and articles on the book itself. Would be useful again for research projects if needed material that didn't have available to you. It is pretty easy to use.
The listening part was cool! That will be helpful for those who can't read or problems seeing. Would need help getting to the article that wanted to listen to. This was an interesting site.

Proquest 2
I searched Library and wow did it give me lots of information to choose from!! There is information on Teen things, Medical things and so much more. Kind of interesting to know we have this kind of resource at our fingertips to use. I like how it gives you the date of the information so you know how far back or current it is. That is always a big help when searching for certain things.
Proquest 1
Growing up I loved to read and still love to read poem by Emily Dickinson so I decided to look up information on her and see what I could find. She went to a Boarding School in South Hadley, Mass. In the article I read it states she didn't leave much information about herself behind....so there are blanks about her life. A person stated that most of her poems have predictable rhyme schemes, making them easy to memorize. They are easy to read and remember. The article also states she would think up her poems while doing chores and then at night is when she would write them down....that is maybe why she used dashes instead of formal punctuation. I didn't know she passed away in 1886...I thought she lived in the 1900s. I still think she is a fascinating person and her poems are very interesting.

SIRS Issue Reseacher
It gives you a long list to look through and see if there is something that catches your eye...I picked suicide. The reason I chose it is because when I was a teenager I had thought about suicide a time or two, the rate of it is increasing now a days and I am reading a YARP book called Thirteen Reasons Why....deals with suicide.
It first comes up with the definition of suicide and when click on topic overview it talks about mental heath. Mental health is a state of cognitive or emotional well-being. There are different research tools that you can use...there is Timeline, Global Impact and Statistics. There are other tools and many things on the home page of suicide that will give you information. Also, there is a box showing where you can get articles...newspaper, magazines, viewpoints, reference and graphic/media. It provides a lot of different information you can use.
Out of the topics to chose from I picked Fine Arts. It gives you a list of different courses - Dance, Music, Opera, Theater and Arts. It also provides you with research ideas....different ones you can choose from. Like if you wanted to learn how to dance the Samba you can click on it and it will take you to a ballroom dance site and you can click on learn the dances, foot positions, posture and so much more. That is really cool!! So much information that my brain is getting fried haha

SIRS Discover
The animal I chose was the Woodchuck in honor of Groundhog's Day yesterday :) Woodchucks hibernate through winter. In summer and early fall they put on weight by eating lots of leaves, twigs, and fruits. They hole up in underground burrows. Their body temperature drops, and they may breathe at a rate of only once every six minutes. That lets them save energy. Can you imagine if we breathed only every 6 mins - wow! They come out in the spring (and seem to always see their shadow-lol) and begin the yearly cycle again.
The article I got my information from was a Highlights for Children Magazine 2006. There are many different articles you can choose from that are provided for you. I thought that was interesting.
The country I picked was Australia - I want to really go there sometime. Love the accent of the people and want to see the animals...Koala Bears and the Kangaroos. Wow that gives you lots of information -- you get facts, economy, population, weather, history and government. Lots to choose from.
I checked out the US map and looked at Minnesota -- you get to look at a picture of the state and lists some of the cites - more of the larger cities. Then I looked at Nations map and looked at Australia -- again you get a picture and lists the different Territories and Regions. I can using this in a classroom if studying a particular state, region or country - gives some information and you can print of the picture to use. Plus it also gives you the time zones of the world!
I went into the Activities section and clicked on read aloud plays -- it gives you the names of different plays to pick from - which I picked The Case of the Watery Popsicle. It gives you the list of characters and then the scenes. That is kind of cool - homeschooling, teachers and librarians can use this for an activity or a story time. This is the first time I have used SIRS and find it very interesting and helpful. I might have to play around with it some more another time :)

Learning Express Library #4
I did the Ebook for Teacher -- the book idea is nice. The print is easy to read and to follow. Has the table of contents so made me feel like I was actually reading a book in my hand and not on the computer :) The first couple of pages that I read were interesting...helping new teachers that just graduated to write down their ideas of what they would like to do or where they would like to go, stay in same town graduated from or go to another country. Plus it mentions how to help those who have been teaching for many years how they can change things to still want to teach. Helps you take a close look at what you are doing or where you want to go.
Learning Express Library #3
When went into the job search and workplace skills there are some really interesting things you can choose from. I went into Determining What You Want From Your Career. It tell you about to make goals for yourself..short term or long term, can do with work, personal or financial goals. This is something I found intereseting - Goal Assessment
As you define your goals, think about the following questions and jot down some notes.
Makes you think about goals and what you want to do with your life. You even have the option to print off items and while taking the course you can submit information and it will be saved for you. Can come back and finish at any time. I wish when I was younger we things like this available to us to help us get prepared for the workforce.
As you define your goals, think about the following questions and jot down some notes.
- What is my goal?
- Why do I want to achieve this goal?
- What benefits will I receive by achieving it?
- How will achieving the goal affect my life and the lives of those close to me?
- Is the goal realistic—something I can achieve if I work hard and stay motivated?
- Is the goal too broad? Does it need to be defined better or broken down into smaller and more achievable short-term goals?
- What is the time frame or deadline for completing the goal?

The test exam I took was for Correctional Officer -- I have friends in that field and was wondering what it took to become one and got the chance today. The test was interesting - I answered the first 8 questions they were multiple choice. You had to look at a picture and memorize it - they gave you 10mins to look at the picture and there is many different things going on it. I got 3 questions right out of 8 :( Not so good. To pass the test you need to get a 70% or better. Guess I better stay a children's librarian lol

Foreign Language #2
I think it is cool to have the article read to you.....patrons that are visually handicapped would be able to use it and get the information they are looking for. It was kind of cool to listen to them speak it to you.
World Book Foreign Language
While going through the Spanish version of the World Book it was a little easier to understand than the other one. I could what the animals were and the name was pretty easy to understand. I see this being used by patrons if they were going to be visiting the country and going to see a zoo or if taking a course in that language would help them out with a little more country knowledge. Plus, if you only have patrons that speak that language then they would be able to use the World Book on the internet without having to struggle.

World Book Online Reference Center
I used Mexico as my country of choice since I will traveling there in a month...this site is helpful. Give a lot of information about Mexico - what I noticed is how convenient the tool bar on the left is -- gives you choices to choose from if looking for information on just the land, or the people without having to read all the information provided. Will save patrons time. On the right hand side there are other related articles that can go and get information. I believe the patrons will use the left side more to get the information they need quicker.
World Book Info Finder
Wow -- Using the Info Finder gives you a lot more information and things you can print off. With the Kids site there is less information so easier to read for them and I couldn't find any areas where you could print off diagrams or pictures of bats for disection. The information on Info Finder goes into more depth about the Bat and the myths of them. It was interesting to read.
Mammals -- The Fruit Bat :)

Most bats live in attics, barns, caves, or other quiet places. There are hundreds of kinds of bats. They live in every part of the world except Antarctica and the Arctic. Most kinds of bats make their home in the tropics, where it is hot.
